Metabolic flux response to salt-induced stress in the halotolerant yeast Debaryomyces hansenii.
The toxic effect of NaCl and KCl on growth of the marine yeast Debaryomyces hansenii on glucose or glycerol was studied. Above a threshold value, both salts reduced the specific growth rate, specific glucose and glycerol respiration rates and specific glucose fermentation rate, as well as biomass yields. The exponential inhibition constant, k, and minimum toxic concentration, Cmin were similar ...

A 65-yr-old female developed cough, fever and dyspnoea following repeated exposure to a home ultrasonic humidifier. High-resolution computed tomography showed ground-glass opacity in both lung fields. Arterial blood gas analysis gave an oxygen tension of 8.38 kPa (63 Torr). Pulmonary function testing revealed restrictive ventilatory impairment with a reduction in the diffusing capacity. The dia...
متن کاملDraft genome sequence of salt-tolerant yeast Debaryomyces hansenii var. hansenii MTCC 234.
Debaryomyces hansenii is one of the most halotolerant species of yeast, and the genome sequence of D. hansenii strain CBS767 is already available. Here we report the 11.46-Mb draft genome of D. hansenii strain MTCC 234, which is even more halotolerant than strain CBS767. Comparative analysis of these sequences would definitely provide further insight into the halotolerance of this yeast.
متن کاملElectron microscopy of ascus formation in the yeast debaryomyces hansenii.
Ascus formation in Debaryomyces hansenii includes fusion of two cells, usually mother and daughter while still attached to each other, through short protuberances developed from the cross wall between them. Nuclear fusion takes place in the channel connecting the two cells; meiosis apparently occurs in the mother cell. Generally, only one lobe of the meiotic nucleus is surrounded by a prospore ...
متن کاملOsmoregulation of the salt-tolerant yeast Debaryomyces hansenii grown in a chemostat at different salinities.
The intracellular solute composition of the salt-tolerant yeast Debaryomyces hansenii was studied in glucose-limited chemostat cultures at different concentrations of NaCl (4 mM, 0.68 M, and 1.35 M). A strong positive correlation between the total intracellular polyol concentration (glycerol and arabinitol) and medium salinity was demonstrated. The intracellular polyol concentration was suffici...
